The Bones of Heads up North
Determination, Loyalty and Passion!
Here are the guys who brought Heads Up North Manchester into fruition:
Nicky Covill
Co-founder/Co-ordinator/The Face of Heads Up North Manchester
From being a kid I've always been into music, pulling influences from parents and siblings my tastes became eclectic. Ranging from Jazz, Old Country, and Blues bands including Rat Pack my tastes kept growing to include 70s rock, 60s Motown, 70s glam to 80s goth and classic rock later incorporating Indie, Punk and of course Metal.

After years of attendance to Jilly's, that later evolved into Rock World, my horizons were broadened further and I became good friends with DJs across the alternative scene. Mark McKenna, John Gannon, Narissa Ferguson, Dave Kelly and too many more to mention! These guys come at you with their brilliant DJ sets and sneaked in guilty pleasures - you were always guaranteed to have a good night and come away with not only fond memories, but newly discovered bands for your playlist on a weekly basis.
Unfortunately due to Rock World closing down in 2010, the alt community was lost for a while and new nights were put on but these were few and far between.

I was then invited, due to being quite popular, (known on the scene as Mummy Nick), to start my own promotions adventure. This began with The Coliseum Manchester Rock Alt night where a couple of the old Jilly's DJs carried on as best as they knew how, delivering the same kind of vibe but nothing would compare to the community that was sorely missed.

Moving forward, with a big shout out and thankyou to Narissa, I gained more experience and grew on my musical tastes, i.e. pop punk/emo and suchlike. My position was to promote nights and arrange entertainment with the likes of artists, bands and even pole dancers. New connections in the music business were formed to eventually go it alone and create CrossXOver. Taking onboard friends with the same passions and interests as myself. As with most things, this sadly had to come to an end due to ill health and friendship breakdowns.

After a few years spent pondering what to do with myself, an old friend Chris O'Connor who has a radio station, voodooradio.online gave me the opportunity to aid him in growing his community to what it is today, bringing DJs together from Manchester and even across the pond. As my position came to lack enthusiasm, I felt my job here was done and decided to part ways, still maintaining the friendships gained throughout my two year journey.

I decided that I wanted more for myself. So, I took my big ideas, along with my big heart, (plus a little kick up the arse from Judy and Sam), plus a book full to the brim of contacts, Heads Up North Manchester was born. I'm always looking for that new adventure!

Hobbies: reading crime novels, pc gaming, socialising
Born in Manchester in March 1987, I am a proud mum of one with a chihuahua and an eclectic taste in music. I work seasonally as an administrator for the NHS and enjoy being part of a team. I was brought up around a strong love of classic rock artists including Meatloaf, Guns n Roses and Bon Jovi and I quickly developed a love of rock and metal. This passion followed me into my late teens when I discovered the infamous Jilly's RockWorld in Manchester - A rock club where I found some of the best friends that are still a major part of my life today. I'm pretty outgoing and love new challenges and making new friends so I'm really excited about this adventure with Heads up North, Manchester.

Being born in the 60’s definitely has it’s advantages, all of my joints now have their own sound effects, people don’t ask you to do strenuous things anymore and you have lived through some of the best music ever written. 60’s flower power, 70’s glam rock, 80’s heavy metal AND electronica

I got into radio almost 15 years ago completely by accident and have never looked back.

Heads Up focuses of non-mainstream talent that hasn’t been corrupted by the media moguls, it’s more about talent than money so let’s find you some new music and I’ll see you at the front \m/

Darren Crook aka The Headless DJ

I started in community radio in 1995, worked across numerous RSLS and then the first full community radio station to be granted a licence . I was primary playing emerging bands and unsigned artists but worked on other shows which had a zoo type format to them, where possible I've engaged, passion and knowledge for movies in the radio work I've done. I've been involved in numerous internet radio projects since knocking community radio on the head, still involving myself in the emerging music scene whilst keeping my feet to the ground whilst playing cutting edge new mainstream music is key - all the while still incapabiztng my passions for the world of celluloid.

Movies, music and having a good time with family and friends are my main passions.

John Gilman
Dental receptionist/ Drummer/concert addict
Born in that there Yorkshire, Catterick army hospital but moved back to the industrial north mining town of Leigh shortly after. From an early age music has been my escape. Initially heavy rock and metal but a friend introducing me to the legendary ‘Peppers’ club in Leigh expanded my musical palette and bands especially The Chameleons, Joy Division, The Smiths and New Order. 2005 a change in my personal life led to me becoming a Jillys rockworld regular til it sadly closed. Room four was my go to. Nerissa introduced me to a lot of bands I’d never really listened to
That much. Reigniting my love of music. My taste in music is not so much eclectic as just diverse. If it’s good I like it. After the lockdown I’ve thrown myself into watching as many bands as I can. From Slayer to St Vincent. By day I’m an office clerk (stole that from Martha) by night I’m a gig addict. 112 bands in 2023 so reviewing gigs just seemed like a natural progression. I’m pretty new but absolutely thrilled to be given this opportunity. I usually focus on the drums at gigs. I’m a drummer myself with an eighties covers band, The Hats (yes, we all wear hats at gigs) I’m massively looking forward to reviewing upcoming gigs. Mainly the acedemy, ritz, arena, gorilla and Albert halls in manchester. If you see me at a gig say hi, 99% of my gigs I go to solo, youll find me in the middle of the mosh pit 🥰

I’m hugely passionate about music and have been told I must have been to 1000 concerts during the last 35 years!I’ve been involved with community/voluntary radio for over 30 years and have somehow managed to hold down a full time job as British Gas for nearly 28 years...

I have interviewed many bands and have had them live in session quite a number of times .I used write a ton of cd/concert reviews back in the 1990’s early noughties.
It’s a nice opportunity to take , writing reviews again. Thanks Nicky !

Gary McIntosh
Promoter/Band Manager
Hi, My name is Gary McIntosh. I am a promoter for Mcintosh Inc Promotions and Booking Agent for Mcintosh Bookings. Born in East Cleveland UK in 1990. Grew up with an eclectic array of music, ie Rock n roll, Motown, Irish Folk, Disco, Rock and Dance/Trance, to name a few. I started being a promoter back in 2010 in Teesside; first putting on local bands in a local Middlesbrough music shop, Called Middlesbrough Music Centre, after the shop closed in the spring of 2011. I then went on to creat my own company, called GJM Promotions, which we held events in Redcar, Middlesbrough and Stockton until 2014, and due to personal reasons I decided to step away. I Came back in 2022, starting afresh, in Blackpool, under a new name Mcintosh Inc Promotions. We began holding events at The Talbot and will now be moving on to new venues in 2024 which include The Belle Vue and Dirty Blondes.

I created Mcintosh Booking as a booking agent in 2023 and at this present time, we have taken on 5 bands; which include:
Dire Thorns, Eyes of Albion, Black Eddy, Bourbon Hitcher and The Undaclass.

Please keep an eye out for these bands in 2024! You are not gonna wanna miss them!!!
Lillith Promos
Promoter/Band
Who is Lilith promos?
Lilith promos started as an overnight idea in March 2023 and by 15th April we had booked our very first gig in Satan's hollow and we had about 30 people in the crowd that made some crazy pits and a congo line around the venue. our first ever gig included Broken jaw, Dystopian sun & Divinitas.
This huge risk turned into me being recognised, featured on podcasts / radio shows, collabing with other promoters, making connections with people I never would have known without doing this and lots more
Me aka B or @weirdogirl666 wanted to create diverse gigs that appeals to different music tastes, includes everyone and make memorable gigs and we still stand by that motto.
Bands we've already had on our radar;
Viral strain, Froglord, hellbearer, awicked side, Any given reason, Divinitas, Green sabre, Auraboros, Kavity, Atarka, Mexican painkiller, Trip wire and many many more

0161 Manchester
Promoter
The 0161 Manchester Underground Metal Community was an idea between myself, Jayne and our good friend Dave Roberts around mid 2019. The original idea was just to create a Facebook page for local bands to share their events and anything band related. I (Jay) decided to drop a post on Facebook on Boxing Day 2019. I got a message a couple of hours later from Jon Pedley. He’s the frontman and guitarist from Manchester thrash band Beyond Salvation. He is also runs Pedley Art. He saw my post and decided to create a logo that he thought fitted the name perfectly. We instantly knew that the logo fitted the name and it seemed like they were meant to go together. The page ran for a few months and started to grow at some speed. It was seen by a friend who was the events manager of Rebellion Manchester. He asked if we fancied putting some shows on and seeing how they go. No I’d never put an event on in my life so it was very daunting. We did a few and they seemed to go pretty well. From there we went to the Alma inn which is located in Bolton. We did lots of shows there which again went very well and from there we was inundated from venues to put some shows on. Since then we’ve done shows all over Greater Manchester. Fast forward a couple of years and myself and Jayne were asked if we wanted to be judges for M2TM Manchester which we really enjoyed. Come 2022 the people running M2TM Manchester were moving out of the area so could no longer run it. They asked us if we fancied doing it. Again it was very daunting as it’s a big thing to be part of the bloodstock family. There’s also a lot of work goes into running/organising it. We did it though and it was very successful and we decided to run 2023 and again it was successful with a sell-out final. We will be running 2024 which is currently underway and we’re taking band applications. My wife Jayne came up with the idea of also putting on a thrash all day event which we decided to call Thrashchester. Our first one was 2021 and it seemed to work. 2022 was a sell-out event so we decided to upscale the venue and move it to Rebellion Manchester for 2023. This also sold out and again 2024 is currently being booked. We’ve created something very special with the 0161 and myself and Jayne appreciate the support it’s been given and continues to do so. Please check out our page for future events. Link below

Unique, Inspirational and Exciting!
Here are the guys that show their continued support and provide assets that are essential to our cause:
Niell Ford a.k.a Fordy & his Beautiful Partner Lisa Nelson
Photographer/venue co-ordinator
Neil got into the alternate, rock and roll scene when he was 15 as he started listening Meat Loaf and as he got older he found his love for alternate music.
A few of my favourite bands include Metallica, Slipknot, Ramstein and Disturbed.

Neil himself take pictures and videos for Heads Up North Manchester at various venues and himself and Lisa got into the platform via good and close friends.

Since Lisa has been with Neil she has come to enjoy and appreciate the alternative scene more and discovered a wider range of rock and metal and come to have a few more favourite band such as Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch and Skindred and many more. These guys are a force to be reckoned with. Loyal and committed, they devote all of their free time to helping us grow as a community. We couldn't do this without them.
Ian Kirkpatrick (aka Dj Ruzt/ IQ/ Eyecue)
Dj/ Producer/ Mixing and Mastering Engineer/ Gamer/ Proud Dad/ Boyfriend to an awesome Chelsea.
Born in 1982, in the sunny lands of Stockport, and dragged up in Adswood. And later on in his life, he took himself his big head to Manchester College, and then Future Works University in Salford, studying Music Technology and Production, and finished with a 2.1 with Honours.
Ian loves to be creative, within any platform, this includes (but not limited to) Game making, Producing dance music, Djing, Drawing, writing, and making videos and Pod Casts. Ian especially loves making dance/ rave/ EDM music, and has created a record label for UK Hardcore called 'Bass Bin Soundz', and is currently signed to a Drum 'n' Bass Record label called 'Red Alfa Records'. Ian first realised his love for making music when he made a jungle bootleg/ remix of the Imperial March, and called it 'Marching Wiv Vader', and the resident Dj at the time, the late John Gannon, told him to take making music seriously. After that he took it upon himself to get some stuff released through a record label, and had his first release on Red Alfa called 'Bad Move/ Comin' At You'. These tracks were made on a Playstation 1, on a 'game' Music2000. When he went to college, he was introduced to a piece of software called Ableton Live, and he took to it instantly. He now has a recording studio and loves making music, Djing music, and loves working with all things that is music.
He also loves gaming, and has been a gamer for most of his life, since the Sinclair Spectrum home computer, which played games from cassette tapes! He also likes to watch films such as action, fantasy, horror (Hellraiser especially), and the odd comedy.... And also loves cats, likes dogs, and doing different accents and impressions.
He works 3 jobs, and one of them is the resident Dj at the Grand Central in Manchester, which is a centre point for music in the Alternative/ Rock music scene, where he plays Rock, Metal, Punk, Emo, Anthems, Classics, and sneaks in some cheese, and the odd dance track.
Ian is quite a laid-back person really, and likes to say things such as "Well.... that's alright" and "Bacon is amazing". He likes to take things more on the light hearted side, and loves to laugh. He has a silly sense of humour and likes to make people smile. He also likes to play 'Devils Advocate', and tries to look at things in a different light. "Seeing the best in everyone is a blessing AND a curse" He has a girlfriend called Chelsea (Who's also part of Heads Up) and has an adopted Daughter called Kim. He loves his friends, and keeps the people he cares about close to his heart.

Im dogs bollax awful at shit like this but here we go…..
I grew up in the middle of Rossendale, no point telling you where it is cause you won’t have heard of it lol.
Growing up and until the age of about 12 I listened to mainly ‘chavy' music, had short spiky hair and believe it or not throughout my who school life only had 3 friends and got bullied everyday.
One day I was having fun with my big bro and he was playing some music his friend had copied for him and I was thinging to myself this sounds really fucking good. He firstly played Blink 182. After a bit he changed the cd (remember those amazing things) to something a bit heavier and my mind was blown. My GOD it was amazing. Non other then Slipknot self titled and 1 particular song really got my attention. Wait and Bleed.
I remember going up to him later and asking if I could borrow his cds and he bloody know which cds and albums I was on about but still was a lil dickish about it. Typicsl big brothers.
So at the age of 12 i was introduced to REAL music and since then my album collection has grown to about 100-150 albums of rock, metal, punk, classic rock and even foreign rock and metal with most of my collect signed by the bands themselves.
Move on the the age of 17 and I actually dont remember who introduced me to the place but hello Jillys rockworld and hello to hundreds and hundreds of new bands, concerts and some amazing new friends.
To this date I couldn't really say a particular band stands out as number 1 favourite but the likes of Five Finger Death Punch, Dope, Korn, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Rob Zombie, Ragr Against The Machine just to name a few however not all bands are to my liking and to be honest with you the likes of Skindred, Avenged, Motley Crew, Steel Panther, Slayer and now Marilyn Manson are some I happily turn my back to.
Anyway over the years I will still be going to many more concerts and being a Download Festival veteran I hope to discover yet many more bands way more pictures, videos and amazing memories.

I arrived in Manchester in 1989 with a pocketful of dreams; one was to introduce the city to Industrial / EBM music as few seemed to know about it!
I came up with the title Rubberclad Battlefied! It seemed appropriate because I had read about nights like Torture Garden and I could see how fitting it would be alongside the militaristic / post apocalyptic image of EBM.
I started out in pubs; The Eagle Hulme, the Boatman's home, Castlefield, a few illegal flat parties in the notorious Hulme Crescents and then I decided to record a live mix to showcase the largely unknown bands like Skinny Puppy, Nitzer Ebb and Front 242.
The tapes with all my own artwork were distributed and well received.
A chance meeting landed me the upstairs room at the Banshee club for Exit 80's, this was a turning point for the scene. Up until then I was seen as 'That quiet lad who dressed like a soldier and listened to that Violent music'
But once Nine Inch Nails appeared, things would never be the same. As a result, some of the small crowd attending would go on to do great things like Underworld and Infest - which I have played at numerous times now with humbling reviews.
I came away from the scene due to a long term relationship but soon returned to find it all a bit different. Using my past experience I landed guest slots at Sin City, Analogue Trash, Club Lash and in time would co-create Black Planet - a regular night at Legends.
But - like most great venues in Manchester, resale and demolition removed them from the map.
Undeterred, I have tried to keep my hand in to get slots at similar nights and the odd side project like Witch House and Experimental.
I had a residency at Ara; a Goth / Industrial / Alt. 80.s night in a church where I continue to entertain with material from the early pioneering days of the Industrial / EBM genre to more current bands.
My most recent residency is Delete Yourself; it's primarily Dark Techno and Hard Dance but my Darker Industrial / Early EBM fits right in.
My day job is installing and repairing sound systems, DJ equipment and lighting. So I can also offer technical support.
