Long before Royal Blood brought bass and drums to the mainstream, Canadian duo Death From Above 1979 was pioneering the scene. Formed in 2001 by Jesse F. Keeler (bass, synths) and Sebastien Grainger (vocals, drums), the band became known for their aggressive dance-punk sound, blending punk rock and electronic music. Celebrated for their energetic live performances, their debut album *You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine* was particularly influential.
Fast forward twenty years, and they’re celebrating with an anniversary tour, playing the album in full, followed by a second set of fan favorites. While I have mixed feelings about these nostalgic tours—appreciating rare tracks but missing the surprise of a varied setlist—Death From Above 1979 delivered an electrifying performance that left no room for disappointment.
From the outset, the band showcased their undiminished enthusiasm, tearing through the album without pause. Sebastien Grainger's belief in minimal talk between tracks kept the momentum relentless, and the crowd's energy never waned, despite knowing the set order.
After the album run-through, they launched into a dynamic second set, featuring an impressive rendition of "White is Red." This portion of the show offered more interaction with the audience, creating an intimate and engaging atmosphere. The first encore featured "Crystal Ball," a track nostalgically connected to a Manchester soundcheck, much to the crowd’s delight. The show concluded with a wild version of "Dead Womb," transforming the Ritz into a massive mosh pit.
Despite previously overlooking this band, their performance was a revelation. The sheer noise and energy generated by just two musicians was astounding. Hats off to Death From Above 1979 for an unforgettable night.
